Definition

Intrinsic Safety is a term used to describe electrical equipment that can provide safe operation in hazardous areas. In areas where dangerous concentrations of flammable substances are present, Intrinsically Safe tools are required. Normal electrical equipment can create tiny sparks in switches, connectors, and circuitry. Additionally, some equipment can generate heat, which can serve as an ignition source. Simply put, a device certified as “Intrinsically Safe” has been deemed incapable of producing hear or a spark sufficient to ignite an explosive atmosphere.
